My Journey
My name is Charles, and Sullux is the company I run with my daughter Natasha. I was born in Vermont and have also lived in Orlando, Seattle and abroad. This is the journey that brought Sullux to where it is today.
1989
Charles' family gets their first computer, an IBM 286 clone. Charles gets his hands on a C compiler and some computer science books and quickly falls in love with the art of programming.
1995
Literally starting in the mailroom, Charles starts helping with ad-hoc IT tasks around the office in addition to his clerical duties.
1996
After helping some coworkers migrate to Windows 95, Charles is tasked with creating a productivity system using File Maker Pro and discovers the joy of using software to solve business operations challenges.
1997
When an employer asks for help with a Microsoft Access database, Charles gets his first opportunity to combine his love of programming with his love of business solutions.
1998
Charles gets his first full-time job in IT as the Human Resources Analyst for the local region of a large multinational. This is also the year Charles first discovers the Linux operating system.
1999
After a friend gets in trouble with homemade MS Access database, Charles offers to help. Several referrals later, Charles is providing software development and IT services as a full-time consultant. Sullux consulting is born.
2003
Consulting dries up during the .com crash and Charles takes a teaching job at a technical school. He spends the next two years teaching computer science, .NET programming skills upgrades for local professors, Windows Server and network infrastructure classes for IT professionals, and occasional computer proficiency courses for local governments.
2005
Charles accepts a job offer from a former student and becomes a full-time .NET developer.
2011
After discovering Node.js, Charles decides to focus his career on full-stack JavaScript. He is finally able to leave Windows for Linux and never looks back.
2015
Finding limited opportunities for career advancement in Vermont, Charles relocates to Seattle and quickly settles into the tech scene. Thanks to a number of kind and patient mentors, he gets his introductions first to management and then later to leadership.
2021
As the software development manager for a small Seattle tech company, Charles relocates to the Caribbean on a digital nomad visa.
2022
While his employer is suffering from the covid downturn, Charles sees the desperate need for opportunities for the bright and talented software engineers in his new Caribbean home. He starts a near-shoring business to connect local talent with the Silicon Valley tech scene.
2024
With the tech downturn underway, Charles takes a step back from the near-shoring operation and returns to his roots: consulting with companies and governments to solve business problems with technology.
2026
Bringing his daughter Natasha into the fold as his business manager, Charles gets back to what he loves: full-time consulting. Sullux is once again open for business.
